RAP in the News
As we wrap up 2011 and look to 2012, RAP is feeling extremely grateful and humbled for numerous reasons. We’d like to share them with you and thank you for your part in it all.
1) Updates on RAP Leaders’ Cases: A Win in Gerardo’s Case!
-RAP Leader Gerardo Noriega recently received word of favorable prosecutorial discretion in his deportation case in the form of administrative closure. This means that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will not be actively pursuing the deportation of Gerardo for an indeterminate amount of time, essentially putting his case on the back burner, but not granting him either a work permit or residency status. Gerardo, his lawyer, and RAP are relieved to hear this news, but also feel this victory is incomplete; he is still left in limbo here with no way to drive, work, afford college, or be a part of this country the way he wants to. Although we will keep fighting for a more complete resolution in his case, we’d like to take the time to celebrate this win and acknowledge all of you who have supported Gerardo throughout this past year! (Press Release Attached.)
Special thanks to Gerardo’s lawyer Hans Meyer, U.S. Representatives Jared Polis of Colorado and Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, United We Dream, Coloradans for Immigrant Rights, a project of the American Friends Service Committee, and of course Gerardo and his family for their courageous commitment to sharing their story for the benefit of all.
-Although RAP Leader Jeanette Vizguerra’s case has been initially denied, her lawyer recently submitted a request for prosecutorial discretion as well and is awaiting a response. Thanks to you all, we were able to collect 66 new letters of support for Jeanette in only a week!! These letters were used in the discretion request along with other supporting documents showing Jeanette’s community activism and the detrimental effects her possible deportation would have on her family and community. We will keep you updated of any new developments and again, thank you all for your concern and action regarding Jeanette’s case. If you did not have a chance to write the letter you can still do so; Jeanette is still accepting letters which can be used later on in the appeal process if necessary. 2) RAP Celebrates Most Successful “Posada Sin Fronteras” to Date
-RAP’s 11th Annual “Posada Sin Fronteras” was held on December 10 and it was a huge success. We’re happy to report an attendance of almost 400 people, the best raffle to date, fun and enlightening theater and musical performances, and we raised more money than ever before! But best of all we got to celebrate and recognize this year’s work with all of you- our wonderful leaders, volunteers, allies and donors. Thanks to all who attended, sponsored, promoted, bought raffle tickets, and volunteered for the 2011 Posada!
3) Thank You!On behalf of RAP Members, Staff, and Board of Directors, we express our deepest gratitude for your support which made our 2011 accomplishments possible. No matter how you choose to celebrate or not celebrate the holidays, we hope this winter season is spent safe and warm with loved ones and we look forward to continue our work for justice with you all in 2012!
