RAP & Coloradans for Safe Communities Defeat Car Impound Initiative

After many long months of phone calls and door knocking, RAP and Coloradans for Safe Communities defeated ballot initiative 300.  Initiative 300 would have forced police officers to impound the vehicles of people who didn’t have their driver’s licenses or registration; even they were just forgotten at home.  These drivers would have had to pay $2,700 to get their car out of impound.  This initiative was opposed by faith, labor and community groups as well as Rights for All People, Coloradans for Safe Communities, the Denver City Council and Mayor John Hickenlooper.

FAMILY UNITY CAN'T WAIT!

Yatzin Islas, a youth leader with Rights for All People speaks out as a mother, daughter, sister, and student for a just and humane immigration reform at Oct. 13th's Family Unity Can't Wait Press Conference.

On October 13, 2009 Rights for All People joined forces with America United Planning Committee members to launch a successful press conference in Aurora, CO. The press conference was part of a series of events that took place accross the nation on the day that Congressman Luis Gutierrez announced his principles for a comprehensive immigration reform.  Speakers including Sen. Morgan Carroll, Rev. Anne Dunlap, and Youth Leader Yatzin Islas urged politicians to end their inaction and enact a comprehensive immigration reform that keeps families together and respects our shared American history as immigrants.  Community members then delivered a collaborative community mural created at the America United community forum entitled "Immigration Reform for Families" to staff members from Congressman Ed Perlmutter's office.  Members asked Perlmutter to support a just and humane immigration reform for our nations' families.  For more on the press conference please check out coverage of the event at:

RAP UPDATES

VICTORY IN AURORA

Rights for All People, in coordination with Coloradans for Safe Communities, helped file a legal challenge in Aurora.

 And on Friday August 14....

A judge has put the brakes on a controversial ballot measure that would have forced police to tow vehicles driven by unlicensed drivers.  According to the judge’s ruling, handed down Friday morning, the 5,278 signatures gathered in support of the measure were invalid because the petition did not include the full text of the initiative.  The judge’s ruling means the measure, which has met stiff opposition from immigrant advocat, law enforcement and area auto dealers, might not make it to this fall’s ballot.

The ruling came after an Aurora woman, Jacqueline Skene, protested the signatures that Dan Hayes, the Arvada real estate broker pushing the measure, filed with the city last month.  “I filed the protest against the initiative because I am very concerned that the proponents misled voters to support a flawed policy through a very flawed process. Unfortunately, these petitions demonstrated both a blatant disrespect for the use of taxpayer funds and a disregard for the rules that protect the voters of Aurora,” Skene said in a statement Friday after the ruling.
